Derek has graduated from 6th grade. The family is unpacking in a new home.  His junior-high brother doesn't share his friends, but Derek finds a friend and mentor in their elderly next-door neighbor. He skips school to take Mr. Matsko the last of the season's strawberries and suffers consequences, but Mr. Matsko's influence remains.
 
Beware the Crossroads, a  YA (or adult?)  novel, shows the brothers at 16 and 17, placed in foster care and needing to find their paths. Memories matter!
